Why OUR BROS Exists

OUR BROS started with a simple, uncomfortable truth: most men don't receive their first flowers until their funeral. They move through life carrying weight in silence, going through the motions without anyone stopping to say — you matter, right now, while you're still here.

A friend and I decided to change that. We walked through our community and distributed flowers to boys and men — no strings attached, no agenda, just a genuine offering. The response was something we didn't fully anticipate. People didn't know what to make of it at first, but it touched something real. The last flower we distributed that day went to my male friend, Ranique Smith.

Two months later, Ranique passed away.

His passing lit a fire in me. It made clear, in the most painful way, how rarely boys and men are affirmed while they are still alive to receive it — and what it costs when we don't. Ranique deserved more than a moment with a flower. He deserved a community that poured into him consistently, intentionally, and without condition.

From that grief, OUR BROS was born. We began the movement by hosting back-to-school drives, providing free haircuts to students for the full school year, and launching a clothing closet to meet immediate needs in the community. In honor of Ranique's lasting impact, I purchased a memorial bench at Elizabeth Park — a permanent place of reflection and a reminder of why this work will never stop.

That is why every part of OUR BROS — Support, Empower, Educate — exists: so no boy or man in our community ever has to suffer in silence, and no one is left wondering whether they mattered.
